"If you've half a mind to join the hash, that's all you need!"
At the appointed place and time, more or less, the hashers gather. A hare has previously set a trail marked by splotches of flour that are followed by the hounds.
The way is not obvious as there are "false" trails and dead ends that are ferreted out by the faster hounds. When the proper trail has been discovered, the lead hound calls out, "On on!"
Note that the trail need not be confined to roads or paths. Mud, water, mountains, ravines and wild animals are not unusual as hares try to create "the worst hash ever".
At the end of the hash, the pack gathers for "down downs" that are accompanied by conspicuous consumption of beer and song, sometimes to the annoyance of the local citizenry.
After the "down downs" is the "on in" at a local hash house or hashers house, during which food and "kilos" of red wine are consumed.
